POSITION OVERVIEW
KONETA seeks an experienced, result oriented and passionate FSL Agronomist with expertise in peanut, vegetable, and fruit production systems. The ideal candidate will drive implementation of high-impact agronomic support initiatives in the Yei, using locally cost effective and innovative agricultural techniques that respond to context-specific challenges such as climate variability, pest-pressure, market access barriers, and limited resources.
The Agronomist will provide technical leadership, mentor smallholder farmers, and develop practical, scalable solutions that improve productivity, diversify production, and strengthen community resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Program Support
- Lead design, planning, and execution of FSL agricultural interventions focused on peanuts, vegetables, fruits and poultry.
- Promote locally viable and climate-smart agronomic practices, including soil fertility management, drought mitigation, integrated pest management, and post-harvest handling.
- Provide expert support to field teams on crop agronomy, production calendars, improved seed/breeding selection, and production planning.
- Guide participatory field demonstrations and learning plots.
Farmer Engagement & Capacity Building
- Coach and mentor smallholder farmers and farmer groups using hands-on training, locally adapted teaching methods, and visual learning tools.
- Strengthen farmers’ skills in nursery management, crop rotation, intercropping, and organic soil improvement methods.
- Foster the adoption of locally relevant innovations, such as low-cost water harvesting, natural pest deterrents, and community seed exchange systems.
- Organize targeted farmers exchange learning visits in the community.
Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Establish and implement FSL monitoring tools, capturing progress on production outputs, adoption rates, and resilience results.
- Collect and analyze data on crop performance, yield increases, farmer adoption, and challenges.
- Submit weekly and monthly high-quality technical reports, success stories, and lessons learned for internal and external use.
- Discuss program progress on a regular basis with supervisor and those set with communities at the field and report accordingly.
Coordination & Collaboration
- Work with County Agricultural Department, local authorities, extension networks, input suppliers, and community leaders to align program actions with community priorities.
- Represent KONETA in agriculture/food security working groups and coordination forums.
- Facilitate access to agricultural inputs and market linkages for target communities by collaborating with private and public actors.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor degree or Diploma in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or related field from recognized institution.
- Minimum 4 years of proven field experience in small and large-scale crop production and agricultural development, especially in peanut, vegetable, and fruit value chains.
- Demonstrated experience working in South Sudan contexts, with understanding of local cropping systems, agro-ecologies, and socio-cultural dynamics.
- Computer literate person with knowledge of word processor, spreadsheet and software use like ENA, SPSS plus other programs is advantageous.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in agronomic best practices for legumes (especially peanuts), vegetables, and fruit trees.
- Familiarity with climate-smart agriculture, low-input technologies, and soil health improvement strategies.
- Competence in adult learning, training facilitation, and community mobilization.
- Strong planning, report writing, and data analysis capabilities.
- Flexible with the ability to cope with stressful situations and able to perform effective and efficient work under minimum supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Diplomatic and culturally sensitive and able to work in a community with diverse cultures.
- Experience in conducting nutrition assessments, surveys, reporting and data analysis.
- Knowledge of nutrition-related policies and guidelines at the national or international level and familiarity with international and national humanitarian operations, coordination systems and mandates of donors (UN agency and other NGO).

- Fluency in English and local languages (e.g. Local Arabic, Bari and any other language spoken in Yei) is strongly advantageous.
- Have a valid riding license and willingness to travel frequently to field sites.
